Terms and conditions for travelling scholarships

General terms and conditions

Below are the general terms and conditions relating to travelling scholarships for for current students. If you are a prospective student, please visit our scholarships page.

Please note, you should refer to the additional information and variations to general terms and conditions section at the end of this page for scholarship-specific information.

Application

By submitting an application for funding: 

  • the applicant is confirming that the information provided on their scholarship application, and all supporting documents, is true and accurate;
  • the applicant consents to his/her funding application documents, including uploaded supporting documents and a copy of his/her student record, being released to the scholarship panel/s;
  • the applicant agrees to informing the scholarships team immediately of any change in information provided in the application form; and
  • the applicant agrees to inform the scholarships team immediately of any change to the project details including proposed project title, travel dates, and travel destination.
Funding offer

The successful applicant(s) will be sent a funding offer by email.

Applicants offered a funding award must accept by the deadline noted on the email. If LSHTM does not receive an acceptance response from the award recipient by the date stipulated in the award email we will assume the nominated candidate is declining this award. Therefore, we will retract our funding offer and make an offer for the same award to the next reserve candidate.

To receive funds/award the successful applicant must return a completed bond form, ethics approval (LSHTM and local), and a completed bank details form, and any additional documents stipulated for the specific award, in a single email to the scholarships team at scholarships@lshtm.ac.uk as soon as possible, and by the deadline date stated on the award letter at the latest.

Funds for PhD (and DrPH equivalent) study will only be released once formal confirmation of upgrading/DrPH review has been submitted to Registry, unless otherwise specified in the scholarship advert.

Masters (MSc) Travelling Scholarships

This funding offer is only valid for the current academic year. If successful applicants are unable to use the funding for their project within the year, then they must contact the scholarships team (via the email above) as soon as possible for advice.

Research Degree Travelling Scholarships

This funding offer is only valid for two years after the original award email is received. After this period awardees that have not claimed their award will be expected to reapply for funding. If successful applicants are unable to use the funding for their project within the two year period, then they must contact the scholarships team (via the email above) as soon as possible for advice.

General

Accepting this award constitutes a legal signature that the award recipient acknowledges and agrees to the declaration, and scholarship terms and conditions.

The award recipient understands that no additional funds can be claimed under this award.

Advertisement and award of travelling and research scholarships does not constitute LSHTM Registry approval to travel. All students in receipt of a travelling/travel & research scholarship award MUST follow the policies, guidance, and requirements of:

  • LSHTM (including LSHTM travel insurance), and
  • UK government, through FCDO guidance, and
  • destination government, and
  • LSHTM travel insurance

at the time of planning, proposed travel, and actual travel.

Should the award recipient need to amend the project details including title, travel dates, and travel destination, a project award amendment request must be submitted to scholarships@lshtm.ac.uk for approval by the funding panel.

The award recipient must inform the scholarships team immediately of any changes to his/her personal circumstances during the period of support which could affect the award. If an alteration in circumstances occurs and it transpires that excess grant funding has been paid, the award recipient agrees to refund the excess to the institution.

We expect students to adhere to the behavioural guidelines and regulations of LSHTM. Funded students who do not may be at risk of losing their funding. For further information on these guidelines and regulations, please read through the general regulations for students.

Funded students must maintain satisfactory academic progress at LSHTM and a good standing towards degree requirements for the duration of their enrolment.

Funds paid to the award recipient once the award has been terminated, or paid in error, or inappropriately, will be reclaimed. The award recipient must understand that the giving of any false information or withholding of relevant information may lead to the termination of any allowance granted and the institution of proceedings for the recovery of any amounts paid by LSHTM.

The award recipient agrees to return the awarded funds to LSHTM within one month of the expected end date of the project if the award recipient does not carry out the project as indicated in their scholarship application proposal.

Claiming award funds

Once you have received an email confirming you are in receipt of an award, you will need to provide documents to the Scholarships team before the payment can be disbursed. Please click on the links below to access and complete these required documents.

An example of the type of documents required are shown below:

  • Confirmation of flight details/ticket
  • Receipt showing proof of payment – this could be an email receipt or proof of payment from your bank account
  • A completed Bond Form
  • A completed Bank Account Details Form
  • Confirmation of LSHTM Travel Insurance
  • A copy of your LSHTM Ethics approval (where required, or confirm by email - with project supervisor cc’d - that ethical approval is not required for the project)

and where appropriate

  • A copy of your local ethics approval

Please refer to your award email for the specific documents you must provide for payment.

General regulations for students

Funded students must maintain satisfactory academic progress at LSHTM and a good standing towards degree requirements for the duration of their enrolment.

Where a scholarship has been made possible by a private gift to LSHTM, the award recipient is expected to:

  • write a short (50-100 word) thank-you letter to the donor; and
  • may be asked to make themselves available to meet with the donor in person. 

The Development & Alumni Relations Office (DARO) will contact the scholarship recipients that are required to do this, and will provide guidance on the suggested content of the thank you letter, and/or identify dates and times for meeting the donor. 

Feedback from award recipients

Additional information and variations

DrPH

The DrPH RSI/OPA Scholarships are intended to support full-time DrPH students registered at LSHTM whose Organisational and/or Policy Analysis (OPA) fieldwork requires travel and related expenses.

To be eligible, applicants must be fully enrolled in the DrPH programme with LSHTM as their primary institution.

The scholarship is intended strictly for costs associated with travel, accommodation, and subsistence directly related to the OPA fieldwork.

Please refer to the advert to confirm if the funding if available for DrPH RSI/OPA or DrPH RSII students.

DrPH RSI/OPA

For DrPH RSI/OPA students the funding can be released prior to completion of the DrPH review (DrPH equivalent to upgrading).

DrPH RSII

For DrPH RSII students the funding will only be released to DrPH awardees on confirmation of DrPH review (DrPH equivalent to upgrading) being submitted to Registry.

DrPH RSII students are able to apply for the Doctoral Project Travelling Scholarship.

Helena Vrbova

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being registered as a full time London based research degree (PhD) student or intensive programme Masters (MSc) student whose research is directed towards malaria.

The scholarship award is intended to support fieldwork and laboratory costs beyond those covered by bench fees for MSc students.

The scholarship does not cover accommodation costs or payments to co-workers or field staff.

Doctoral Project Travelling Scholarship

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being registered on a DrPH or PhD programme at LSHTM. LSHTM must be the student’s primary institution (the final degree to be issued will be awarded by LSHTM).

As this funding is intended for doctoral projects, any award will only be paid once students have submitted final confirmation of upgrading or DrPH Review to the Scholarships team in Registry.

Due to the source of some of the funds available, some preference may be given to applications for visits to .

Where appropriate, ethics approval must be obtained (LSHTM and local) and will need to be submitted to the Scholarships Team in Registry before any funding can be released.

All those in receipt of a Research Degree Travelling Scholarship award must follow the policy, guidance and requirements of LSHTM (including LSHTM travel insurance), UK FCDO, and destination government, at the time of proposed and actual travel).

David Bradley Travel Grant 

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being registered on a full-time intensive programme MSc at the °®ÍþÄÌapp of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

The awards are available for MSc projects where the focus is on HIV, malaria, or Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) research.

Applications will be assessed on relevance (HIV, malaria, NTD research); the scientific merit of the proposal; and the submitted budget for feasibility and reasonable economy.

Due to the source of funds, students applying for this funding must be from a  income country. However, the country visited for the MSc project must not be the ‘home’ country of the scholar, and neither should the institution be that at which the scholar was working prior to becoming a student.

Amanda Jaclyn Berger Research & Travelling Scholarship 

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being registered on the intensive MSc Public Health programme at the °®ÍþÄÌapp of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. (It is not available to students registered on MSc Public Health for Global Practice.)

Funding is only available for projects on non-communicable diseases in a  (LMIC), as per the World Bank list. Please note: this scholarship should not support payments for research assistants and/or field staff.

Students returning to their (LMIC) home-country for the MSc project may apply for this travelling scholarship as long as their project is not desk-based.

Dr Ijeoma Ejekam Idaresit Fund Scholarship 

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being registered on the intensive MSc Public Health programme at the °®ÍþÄÌapp of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Students must be West African nationals (with their LSHTM student record showing one of the following nationalities: Benin, Burkino Faso, Cabo Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo). Preference will be given to students from Nigeria, and students with an interest in maternal health and/or mental health.

Val Curtis Memorial Fund 

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being registered on an intensive MSc at LSHTM.

Funding is only available for projects with a WASH focus, such as projects looking at water-related, sanitation-related, handwashing or hygiene-related topics.

Students must be nationals from a country in  (as per the World Bank list), or India.

Students returning to their home-country must make sure their MSc project is not desk-based.

The scholarship does not support payments for research assistants and/or field staff.

MSc Project Scholarships (Trust Funds)

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being registered on an intensive London-based MSc programme,

Awards provide support for return flights to project destinations, up to the advertised value.

Projects must align with LSHTM’s mission and take place in a 

Students receiving full travel funding from other sources are not eligible.

The funding does not cover internal overland travel or other project expenses.

Students are responsible for booking their flights and should aim to do so early, as prices may increase and the award may not fully cover costs.

George AC Bassadone OBE Fund 

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being registered for full time study on a London-based MSc programme.

Awards provide financial assistance for MSc project-related travel and research costs.

Preference is given to students who are nationals of and ordinarily resident in , and to projects based in sub-Saharan Africa.

Neil Davis Memorial Scholarship 

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being registered on the intensive MSc Health Policy, Planning & Financing programme (full-time or part-time).

Awards support research and travel costs associated with MSc projects.

Preference is given to projects focused on Cambodia, South-East Asia, Nigeria, or Malawi, or those addressing malaria, cancer, health finance, or micro-business development.

EPH Travelling Scholarships

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being a current research degree student registered on a DrPH or PhD programme at LSHTM, with LSHTM as their primary institution.

Funding is intended to support travel and associated expenses directly related to the student’s doctoral research project.

Applicants must have completed the upgrading process (or DrPH equivalent) and submitted confirmation to the Scholarships Team before funding can be released.

Funding must be used exclusively for travel, accommodation and equipment/consumable expenses related to the doctoral research project.

Toritse Orubu Scholarship

This scholarship offer is conditional upon the applicant being registered on a full-time London-based MSc programme at LSHTM.

Awards support MSc project-related travel and research costs.

Students applying for this Scholarship must be both nationals of and ordinarily resident in Nigeria.
