Writing disability

This event will discuss the pitfalls when it comes to writing about disability, and will ask whether we are allowed to find the humour in disability.

LSHTM event

Grace Spencer Green has written a beautiful non-fiction account of the injury that left her paralysed and her journey to become a doctor; Tom Shakespeare has written two novels featuring a disabled character, partly in an effort to show disability is no obstacle to achievement. This event will discuss the pitfalls when it comes to writing about disability, and will ask whether we are allowed to find the humour in disability.

Speakers

Grace Spence Green is a junior doctor and writer working to challenge the narratives surrounding disability, medicine and identity. She is passionate about paediatrics, public health, advocacy for the disabled community and challenging ableism, the stigma surrounding disability and inaccessible spaces. Her book, 'TO EXIST AS I AM, a doctors notes on recovery and radical acceptance’ charts her journey from patient to doctor, and explores what it truly means to recover.

Tom Shakespeare is the Co-Director of the International Centre for Evidence in Disability (ICED).
