The WHO has published a global TB report every year since 2018, with a view to providing a comprehensive assessment of the TB epidemic and the progress made in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. This year’s report is particularly important as it comes just a few days before the U.N. high-level meeting on TB, which will be held in New York on 26 September.
The WHO reports that, in 2017, there were 10 million new cases of TB and 1.6 million people died of it, with 300,000 of these deaths among HIV-positive people. Although the disease burden is falling across the world, it is not falling fast enough to reach the first milestones of the End TB Strategy. Therefore, WHO calls for “intensified research and development”.
