The results of a three-year research project into the role of law in supporting or constraining pandemic flu preparedness in Europe will be launched at a meeting in Brussels on 23 September.

The results of the PHLawFlu (Public Health Law Flu) conference, Pandemic Influenza Preparedness in Europe: Are National Public Health Laws Fit for Purpose? will be presented by Professor Robyn Martin, Centre for Research in Primary and Community Care, University of Hertfordshire and Professor Richard Coker, Professor of Public Health at the °®ÍþÄÌapp of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine on 23 September 2010 at the European Parliament in Brussels.

This conference is co-organised by the °®ÍþÄÌapp of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Hertfordshire, together with Technische Universität Dresden, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Toulouse, and Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and in collaboration with the Centre for Disease Control, RIVM, the Netherlands and Escuela Andaluza de Salud Pública, Granada.

In addition to presenting the project findings, leading law and health academics from across Europe will debate the implications of the findings for states within Europe and for European pandemic disease strategies, highlighting:

• Implications for European and cross-border disease control
• Implications for national public health legislation across Europe
• Implications for the protection of human rights in a pandemic
