Mycoplasma genitalium - the 'silent' emerging super-bug

Jason Ong

Mycoplamsa genitalium is a sexually transmitted pathogen that is associated with cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease and urethritis. Of concern, there are reports of a rapid rise in antimicrobial resistance to macrolides (used as first-line therapy) and quinolones (second-line therapy). There is lack of consensus regarding its clinical presentation (particularly its association with proctitis) and how we should screen for this pathogen.

Jason Ong is a sexual health physician and researcher from Monash University in Australia, and is an honorary Associate Professor at the °®ÍþÄÌapp of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He will discuss his research on: MG detection in men who have sex with men in Australia;  MG detection in women living with HIV in South Africa;  MG prevalence in sexual contacts in Australia, and the cost-effectiveness of screening for MG.
