Dr Kalpana Sabapathy

Clinical Assistant Professor - (HCC)

United Kingdom

I am a clinical epidemiologist and joined LSHTM in 2012. I am PI on the SHEAR Zim (Significance of Hypertension in Early Adulthood Research in Zimbabwe) study, funded by a Wellcome Trust fellowship. I am also PI on a study examining community approaches to improving detection and monitoring of high blood pressure in Zimbabwe, funded by the Medical Research Council.

I previously worked in HIV as an investigator on the landmark HPTN 071 (PopART) trial, leading nested studies on the acceptability of the PopART testing and treatment interventions in Zambia and South Africa; as an Academic Clinical Fellow in genito-urinary medicine and HIV at Imperial College NHS Trust; and as field doctor and later HIV Advisor for Medecins Sans Frontieres. I maintain clinical practice as a part-time GP (Honorary Consultant at NHS England).

I co-organise the Non-Communicable Disease Epidemiology Masters module at LSHTM teach on other modules and short courses. I supervise two post-doctoral students and am on the advisory committee for another PhD student.

I lead the 13-30y BP research group focusing on evidence gaps and priorities for research in young people with elevated blood pressure, and am on the WHO task force steering strategy on elevated blood pressure in youth. I also serve on the LSHTM Employment Model Review Programme Board, LSHTM Open Research Working Group and the British and Irish Scoeity for Hypertension Education Committee. I am committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in academia and mentor colleagues in the UK and Zimbabwe.
