I am mixed-methods researcher working on public health needs in settings affected by armed conflict and forced migration. This has focused principally on mental health and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). My current research is through mainly through the Wellcome Trust/NIHR funded CHANGE project which is developing and evaluating a mental health and harmful alcohol use intervention for refugees in Uganda and conflict-affected persons in Ukraine. Recent work has also been on co-leading the UKRI funded GOAL study which examines health governance and financing for supporting mental health responses for Syrian refugees and vulnerable Lebanese in Lebanon. I have also worked on health system responses on NCDs for crisis-affected populations in Lebanon and in the Democratic Republic of Congo. I am currently conducting some work with the WHO on strengthening health service responses for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
I was the Guest Editor for the journal of Migration and Health’s series on internal displacement and health (2021-2022), and Guest Editor for the Lancet series on public health in humanitarian crises (2017). I was a funding panel member of the R2HC humanitarian health research funding scheme (2016 to 2022). I am also on the Board of Directors for the NGO the International Alliance for Diabetes Action (IADA).
