Professor Caroline Relton
Pro-Director Research and Academic Development
United Kingdom
I am Pro Director for Research and Academic Development at LSHTM. As a member of the Executive Team my responsibilities include oversight of research, innovation and impact strategy, research culture, governance and integrity, partnerships, the Doctoral College, inter-disciplinary °®ÍþÄÌapp and academic development (career development and promotions).
My research interests lie in investigating the role of epigenetics in development and disease and the use of epigenetic biomarkers in applied health contexts.
I am Emeritus Professor of Epigenetic Epidemiology at the University of Bristol.

Teaching
I have experience of designing and teaching undergraduate, Master's and short course programmes, mainly in the field of Molecular Epidemiology. I act as a visiting lecturer on various taught programmes.
Research
My research interests are in genetic and epigenetic epidemiology. My work has involved both methodological development and applied research, with the aim of seeking to understand the role of DNA methylation in common complex disease. I have investigated the role of common genetic variation in determining DNA methylation variation and used genotype to explore causal pathways via molecular mediation. I have also studied the use of DNA methylation, as well as other molecular phenotypes, in disease prediction, prognosis and patient stratification.
My current work focuses on the use of DNA methylation biomarkers as indices of common risk factors (smoking, age, inflammation, adiposity, etc.) and their application in risk stratification and is funded by Cancer Research UK.
