Dr Chloe Hutchins

I am a microbiologist with diverse laboratory experience (basic-, applied- and translational sciences), including as supervisor and curator.

I have had leading roles in project coordination, and collaboration experience with healthcare providers, public health bodies, the clinical- and food production industries, and global health partners.

I am currently a member of the Global Task Force for Cholera Control (GTFCC) Laboratory Working Group.

I completed my PhD with the Biosafety, air and water microbiology group at Public Health England (Porton Down, UK) in collaboration with the University of Southampton, investigating engineering and human behavioural factors influencing the colonisation of hospital taps with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Before joining LSHTM, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher for the Quadram Institute Bioscience (Norwich, UK) specialising in Listeria monocytogenes persistence in the food production industry, unusual clinical infections, and also developing methods for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in stool.

Research
My research interests are in optimising cholera field-, surveillance- and research methods, including developing a novel V. cholerae multiplex qPCR assay, working closely with Johns Hopkins University, Epicentre, the CDC and Institut Pasteur.

I am currently working on Oral Cholera Vaccine impact evaluations in Uvira, as well as in Goma and Lubumbashi in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
