Dr. Elaine C. Flores

Peruvian physician, epidemiologist, and mixed-methods researcher at the Centre on Climate Change and Planetary Health and the Centre for Global Mental Health (LSHTM-King's College London). Dr. Flores holds a PhD in Epidemiology and Population Health from LSHTM. Her doctoral research focuses on mental health and resilience-promoting strategies associated with El Niño Southern Oscillation in Peru.

 

Her research examines the intersection between climate change and global health. She has extensive experience working with communities affected by extreme events and environmental stressors across Latin America, East Africa, and the United Kingdom. She specialises in working with vulnerable populations, including people with mental health conditions, indigenous groups, women, adolescents, and environmentally displaced communities.

 

Dr. Flores is a former Planetary Health fellow in a collaboration Fellowship program with Stanford University, co-principal Investigator of the Environment x Women's Health Project (ExWH), and co-founder of PLASMA, the Latin American Platform for Social Research on Mental Health. She has collaborated on several initiatives and organisations, including the Rapid Research Evaluation and Appraisal Lab (RREAL) at UCL, 

The Department of International Development at the University of Oxford and the South American Chapter of the Lancet Countdown.

 

She regularly supervises PhDs, Drph and MSc students.


Additionally, Elaine has several years of professional experience in Clinical Research Operations, Clinical trials management, and medical writing. She has also worked in Quality Assurance, Clinical Trials monitoring, regulatory affairs, and auditing.

Research

Her main work is on the mental health impact of environmental factors and disasters, resilience-promoting factors, social determinants of health, and other global health topics, especially with an LMIC and interdisciplinary perspective.

Her work explores adaptation and mitigation strategies for climate change and their impacts on mental health and wellbeing. It combines academic rigour with practical applications for evidence-based policy development in global health challenges.
